Gaslighting

Updated: Jun 24, 2023

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, making them question their own memory, perception, or sanity.

Why do people gaslight? People may gaslight to gain power and control over others or to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. It can also be a manifestation of deeper psychological issues such as narcissism or insecurity. However, it is important to note that gaslighting is never justified and can be emotionally harmful to those who experience it.

How do you know if you are gaslighted? Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse where the abuser manipulates the victim into doubting their own sanity and perception of reality. Some signs that you may be experiencing gaslighting include feeling confused, constantly apologizing, feeling like you can't do anything right, feeling like you're going crazy, and being isolated from friends and family. It's important to remember that gaslighting is a form of abuse and it's not your fault.

Keep in mind gaslighting does not only occur in a personal relationship but can be present in your professional life as well.

If you suspect you're being gaslighted, it's important to seek support from a trusted friend or professional.
